The trailer for Netflix’s Devil May Cry has given fans their emotional first look at VP Baines – a new character played by the legendary Batman actor Kevin Conroy.

Conroy voiced Batman in a number of animated shows and video games. He died in 2022, aged 66.

The full trailer for the Netflix adaptation of Devil May Cry was shared yesterday (March 12) and confirmed Conroy’s involvement in the animated series. Series creator Adi Shakar went on to confirm that his performance was recorded before he passed away and no AI was used.

“Mr. Conroy gave it an amazingly nuanced performance. It was both a pleasure and an honour to work with him,” he added.

“It was an honour to work alongside Kevin Conroy for the upcoming DMC series,” wrote Johnny Yong Bosch who played Nero in the games but is voicing Dante in the Netflix series. “A true legend. Batman: The Animated Series redefined cartoons for me. For those wondering, our recording sessions took place a few years ago—animation takes quite some time to complete.”

Netflix’s Devil May Cry is loosely based on the 2005 prequel game Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening but the trailer also introduces elements from across the beloved franchise.  “In this animated adaptation of the popular Capcom game and from the vision of Adi Shankar, sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck,” said Netflix.

Kevin Conroy will voice new character VP Baines and while not much is known about him, he can be heard in the opening seconds of the trailer.

“I can’t wait to hear his performance. It’s always a pleasure to hear his work,” wrote one fan. “Looking forward to hearing the goat again,” said another. “A legend, and unforgettable talent. Forever, and always,” added a third.

Conroy has posthumously starred in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and MultiVersus as well as DC movie Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three and Amazon Prime Video’s  Batman: Caped Crusader.

In other news, The Boys‘ Jack Quaid has revealed his dream role would be starring in an adaptation of a classic video game.
