(Undated) — “Bird flu” has been confirmed in Crawford County. The Crawford County Health Department recently received notice from the Illinois Department of Public Health that birds collected in the county tested positive for avian influenza. Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing sporadic outbreaks in poultry and dairy cows, with several human cases in the United States. While the current public health risk is low, CCHD is monitoring the situation carefully and working with local and state partners to assess and respond to humans with animal exposure. The CCHD and IDPH remind the public that the best way to prevent bird flu is to avoid sources of exposure whenever possible. People should avoid direct contact with sick or dead wild birds, poultry, or other animals.
