Herrera first Cardinals catcher to hit 3 home runs in one game!

There was not a recapper on the schedule but I thought this game deserved a recap so here we go! Sssshhh I’m “working”.

Sonny Gray didn’t have one of his good starts but it didn’t matter because the cardinals offense bailed him out. He gave up 5 hits, 2 home runs including a grand slam, but in typical fashion K’d 9 batters over 6 IP. A less than quality start but with a great K rate!

After a couple of extra innings hiccups the bullpen was good today, including appearances by Maton, Romero, and Leahy who all held the line.

Let’s talk offense! Nootbaar rocks at leadoff! His OBP is now .533. He went 2 for 5 today. Contreras busted out of the shell of himself and had 2 RBI from the 2 slot, including his first hit and walk of the season. Baker and Burleson both walked today which is sort of weird, but good. Arenado continued his resurgence and was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI. NORTH OF 200 wRC+ on the season. He also walked TWICE today.

Herrera’s big day: three for four, three runs scored, SIX RBI, a walk, and every hit was a home run making him the only cardinals catcher ever to hit three home runs in a game.

Donovan quietly went 0-5, Walker was 1-4 with a walk, Victor Scott II still looks like a smart addition to the MLB team at 1-3 with a walk on the day, and Winn snapped out of it with a 2 for 4 day and 2 runs scored!

The cardinals are tied with the Yankees and Padres for second in team OBP at .381! They’re in the top 5 teams for home runs (and all at Busch stadium!). And they’re tied for third in team batting average.

Off day tomorrow then the birds fly out of the coop and head to Boston who is 1-4 so far. 3:10pm.
