(Undated) — This week is “National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.” It was established in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California to recognize the dedication and hard work of public safety telecommunicators. In 1994, the week was formally recognized with a Presidential Proclamation, declaring the second full week of April as NPSTW. Crawford County Sheriff, Bill Rutan and the law enforcement departments throughout the county are celebrating by highlighting our local 911 dispatchers. They say a dispatcher is someone who answers the 911 lines, listens to the cries of those who need help, gives pre-arrival instructions, possibly provides life-saving directions on the line, does 10 things at once while typing feverishly to obtain all critical info, all while making sure responders are safe. Rutan says he and the rest of the staff thank every one of the dispatchers for all that they do.
