NME’s latest star of The Cover, Chloe Qisha, has put together an exclusive playlist to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.
The Malaysian-British alt-pop singer is on this week’s (April 28) edition of The Cover, a manifestation of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read Chloe Qisha’s profile here, written by Alex Rigotti and featuring photography by Amir Hossain.
Qisha has curated a playlist full of tracks that she thinks encapsulate ‘21st Century Cool Girl Energy’, ranging from current pop icons, such as Troye Sivan and Ariana Grande, to legends of the past, including ABBA and The Human League. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.
It’s been less than a year since Chloe Qisha released her debut single, ‘VCR Home Video’, but already she has all the makings of a future pop icon. This didn’t happen overnight – while she was taking her time to release something, she was slowly building her confidence at her school talent show and figuring out who she was as an artist. “I see it as 50 per cent me taking my time and not settling for anything I wasn’t totally happy with,” she told NME, “and 50 per cent the universe being like, ‘Nope. Not noooow. You will wait until a man named Rob Milton [The 1975, Holly Humberstone] comes into your life, and you will write amaaazing songs.’”
Elsewhere in The Cover, Qisha discusses her reaction to finding out Kelly Clarkson had covered ‘I Lied, I’m Sorry’ on her NBC talk show, learning to be proud of her Asian heritage and wanting to represent East Asian women in pop, and her unstoppable, ambitious energy. “I’ve never envisioned a glass ceiling,” she affirmed. “I’ve always been like: ‘let’s go wherever this takes us’.”
