(Undated) — Water customers in Crawford County will be receiving a envelope in the mail marked “Public Health Notice.” Oblong Mayor, Teresa Fielder, took to Facebook to explain what exactly this letter means. According to Fielder, Oblong purchases it’s water from Robinson-Palestine Water Commission and in April the Robinson-Palestine Water Commission as well as Oblong Water Department was notified of the results of a test conducted in September of 2024. The test showed a level of .6 parts per trillion over the maximum concentration level for “PFAS” or “forever chemicals.” For comparison, Fielder says that 1 part per trillion is equivalent to 1 second in 32 years. However, due to the “Right of Know” Law, Oblong Water Department must follow up with letters notifying water users of this test result. For more information about PFAS visit epa.illinois.gov.
