(Undated) — The IDPH recently reported the first confirmed measles case in Illinois and the Crawford County Health Department is sharing important information. The CCHD reminds the public that the measles vaccine is safe and effective. They and the IDPH urge all Illinois residents to check that they are up-to-date on their MMR vaccinations. They say two doses of the vaccine are 97% effective at preventing measles. Despite the confirmed case, health officials say that the risk of measles transmission for the general public in Illinois remains low. The CCHD says symptoms show up within 2-8 days of exposure and include a rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, red/watery eyes, and tiredness. The public is reminded that measles can be contagious before showing symptoms, and measles spreads easily through contact with respiratory droplets and via airborne spread.
